Remembering a Monarch: A Tribute to James Lum '69

James K.S. Lum. Mar 25, 1951 - May 21, 2025

It is with deep gratitude and fond remembrance that the Damien Alumni Association recognizes the generosity of the Lum ohana in memory of James Lum, Class of 1969. In a beautiful and heartfelt gesture, his daughter, Jamie Johnston (Sean), has made a significant donation of $1,000 and a 55-inch television to our annual golf tournament fundraiser. This generous contribution will be a highlight of our prize giveaways and a wonderful testament to her father's spirit of giving.

James, a resident of Pearl City, passed away on May 21, 2025, at the age of 74. Born in Honolulu, he was a devoted family man, survived by his son, Justin Lum; daughter, Jamie Johnston (Sean); sister, Alison Higa; and grandchildren, Connor and Chloe Johnston.

James embodied the heart of the Damien Alumni Association. He was a true Monarch, not just as an alumnus, but as an unwavering supporter and an active volunteer. For many years, he was an ever-present supporter of our fundraising events, always giving his time and energy to ensure their success. His commitment to the school went beyond financial support; he was part of a small, dedicated group of alumni who annually volunteered their time during the summer to repaint the school lockers, a quiet act of service that left a lasting impact on our campus. The Damien community extends our deepest condolences to the Lum family. We are incredibly grateful for their kōkua (help) and for honoring James's legacy in a way that continues his dedication to our association. We will miss his generous spirit and his steadfast support.

As we gather for our golf tournament, we will be celebrating the spirit of community and service that James so perfectly represented. His memory will live on in the hearts of those he helped and in the very halls and classrooms that he so lovingly maintained.

Once a Monarch, Always a Monarch.
